Academic Resources
Priority Enrollment
FYRE Scholars receive priority registration for classes for each quarter until graduation. This allows students to enroll in any class that is not restricted.
Textbook Scholarships
FYRE Scholars are provided funding to purchase textbooks for classes through non-profit partnerships. Organizations such as the John Burton Advocates for Youth: Burton Book Fund and Echoes of Hope. These organizations have their own requirements of eligibility for book funding that are separate from the FYRE Scholars Program.
Textbook Loan Program
FYRE Scholars may borrow available textbooks from FYRE and SSI. FYRE Scholars may check out up to two textbooks or course materials per quarter. To look at the available books:

Chromebook Loan Program
FYRE Scholars may borrow available Chromebooks from SSI through the Gateway Initiative Program. Learn more information on how to loan a Chromebook.
Larc Tutoring Scholarship
FYRE Scholars can receive a scholarship for LARC Tutoring. UCI offers tutoring through the Learning and Academic Resource Center (LARC) which costs $125 per quarter. However, SSI provides a scholarship to cover that fee. FYRE Scholars are required to complete an online scholarship agreement form and must adhere to the terms of the agreement every quarter.
Testing Material and Printing
FYRE Scholars have access to free printing and testing material such as scantrons, blue books, etc… To get these materials or if you have any questions, contact us.
Basic Needs Resources
Guaranteed housing
FYRE Scholars receive priority on-campus housing each quarter until graduation. Housing includes residence halls such as Mesa Court, Middle Earth, Campus Village, and Arroyo Vista; apartments part of American Campus Communities (ACA) such as Vista del Campo, Vista del Campo Norte, Camino del Sol, and Puerta del Sol.
Calfresh Assistance
Most FYRE Scholars may be eligible for CalFresh. FYRE works closely with on-campus CalFresh Advocates to guide the FYRE Scholars with the CalFresh application. CalFresh is a program that offers financial assistance to buy groceries. Some individuals may receive up to $194 to buy groceries.
Food Pantry at Fresh Hub
UCI’s Fresh and Mobile Pantries offer emergency food and toiletries to UCI students. To access the pantry, all you need is your UCI Student ID, or ID number.
Personal Development Resources
Academic & Career Support
FYRE Scholars are required to schedule one meeting per quarter with the FYRE Counselor to receive one-on-one personalized academic & career support. This meeting would encompass conversation regarding any academics/classes, resources, opportunities on-campus (jobs, internships, volunteering, etc…), and any personal support needed.
Monthly Workshops
Workshops are designed for FYRE Scholars that consist of topics such as on-campus resources and opportunities, time management and study skills, health and wellness, financial literacy, summer planning, career exploration, graduate school preparation, etc. Some workshops are hosted by Student Success Initiatives and the Transfer Student Center.
Fyre Peer Mentor
FYRE Scholars are paired with a mentor who guides and supports them throughout their academic year. FYRE Scholars are expected to check-in with their mentor on a monthly basis for 30 mins or less, as well as attending social events to continue community development.
Referrals to on-campus liaisons
FYRE Scholars are referred to our liaison for academic advising and support, housing issues, financial aid concerns, and mental health services. To get referred, make an appointment with the FYRE counselor.
Community of Support
The FYRE program creates an environment to support and encourage each scholar. Workshops, events, and socials are all used to encourage scholars to connect with one another and help each other through the college journey and beyond.
Professional Resources
UCI Division of Career Pathways
The Division of Career Pathways provides many resources for students to develop professionally. They offer resources such as their resume and cover letter revision, career exploration advising, internship and job opportunities in forms of career fairs, shadow programs, and more!
Career Toolkit
The career toolkit is an online PDF from the Division of Career Pathways that has information on how tow rite a resume and cover letter. It has examples of resumes and cover letters, interview tips, and different ways to improve a resume.
VMOCK
VMock is an online software that reviews and revises resumes. It provides feedback to help students with the impact the resume has and the presentation. It also makes suggestions to show your analytical, communication, leadership, teamwork, and initiative skills.
Handshake
Handshake is used for applying to jobs and internships for college students. On campus jobs usually use this platform to hire students. In addition, through Handshake, you can make appointments with career counselors at the Division of Career Pathways and events that they have.
O*Net Online
O*Net Online is helpful for students who are in the process of doing career exploration. Some information that can be found includes occupations, interest profilers, job specifics, skills required for different occupations, and more.
Occupational Outlook Handbook
The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a US Government website that lists occupations and careers with information such as salary, education requirements, work environment, job outlook, and more. This is a great resource for career exploration.
